  • Futsal is the official UEFA and FIFA version of 5 a side football
  • Futsal has World Championships and UEFA Championships for national teams, a UEFA club championship and international competitions for Universities in both genders
  • Futsal is essentially a non-contact sport that is mostly played indoors
  • Futsal originated in Brazil & Uruguay as Futebol de Salao (Indoor football) in the 1920s
  • The main feature of futsal is the size 4 ball, which has a restricted bounce so it stays on the floor
  • Futsal has had a major influence on the technical development of stars such as Pele, Zico, Ronaldo, Figo and Ronaldinho
  • Futsal has impacted on the style of Brazilian football and the re-emergence of Spain on the internatonal scene. These two countries are the only nations ever to win the FIFA World Championship and most children are introduced to football via futsal in those countries
  • Futsal is played professionally in many countries across the globe, including Brazil, Argentina, Spain, Italy, Russia, Portugal and Belgium. It is regularly shown on TV in those countries
  • Many world famous football sides like Boca Juniors, River Plate, Barcelona, Lazio, Sporting Lisbon and Benfica have futsal teams
  • In Italy there are four times more registered futsal players than footballers

   WHY KIDS SHOULD PLAY FUTSAL:
Of all the 8 year old players currently playing football in Ireland, 72% will have dropped out by age 14 !
The reasons given are:
-No fun
-Sub all the time
-Too much pressure
-Too much competition
-Fear of failure
-Overemphasis on physical prowess

Futsal helps because:
  • Players are more involved in the game and get more touches of ball, which accelerates technical improvement
  • Playing in tight spaces makes players think about movement and improves their close control and passing
  • Games are non contact: reduce injury fears
  • Fun aspect encourages youngsters to participate and stay in the game
  • Rolling substitutions and mixed gender games make futsal a truly unique & Fun experience for all age groups
  • Futsal has more opportunities to get shots on goal - which kids love

Futsal Ball

  • The ball tends to stay on the floor so, players get more contact with ball
  • Techniques such as dribbling, touch and close control are improved at a quicker rate
  • Futsal ball is easier to control (this breeds confidence particularly in younger players)
  • The ball is not heavier than a normal ball. It's double-bladder design takes the bounce out!
  • The sole of the foot tends to be used more with a less bouncy ball
